Her Story : Chandler Honey

My name is Tique Chandler, and I grew up in a very small town in Alberta on a bee farm, where I learned how to care for bees at a young age. Even as an adult, my parents' honey was always my favourite, but I knew I wanted to put my own unique spin on the product to make it my own. Chandler Honey is a collection of naturally infused raw honey, all from my parents' farm, made with the addition of real ingredients like lemon zest or Madagascar vanilla beans. Love is added to the product every step of the way.

I picked the name Chandler Honey (Chandler being my maiden name) because I got married around the same time the business launched. While I legally changed my surname to match my husband's, I knew I wanted to keep Chandler with me in a meaningful way. I can think of no greater way to honour my family's history or my childhood than to associate it with products I am so deeply passionate about.

Getting to know the face behind the brand.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love that every day is so different! Some days, I'm in the production room zesting oranges and creating the product (which is so much more enjoyable now that I've got a TV in there!). Some days I'm at markets (like One of a Kind!), sampling and selling product to customers. I also have sales days, accounting days, social media strategy days, delivery days, and some days where I don't feel like doing anything at all - so I don't :)

This kind of freedom is only available to me because I own my business and have no one to answer to except myself! I truly never take it for granted.

What type of marketing works best for you? If you'd like to share any tips/advice for marketing other than social media.

While social media is wonderful at keeping my existing audience engaged, it is getting tougher and tougher to grow on Instagram and reach new people. I find that the best kind of marketing is in person, where I can get people sampling the honey. I love doing markets myself, but I'm also experimenting with hiring contractors to do markets outside of the city that I wouldn't be able to do myself. People tend to love the product, and luckily keep coming back for more after they have tasted it!

I've also had a lot of success cold-DMing small independent stores that would be a great fit in stocking Chandler Honey. At the end of the day, my most important job is sales! I try a lot of different tactics, because I find that things change so quickly and what worked last month might not keep working this month.

Words of Inspiration.

My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is that there is never a 'right' time to start a business; you just have to take the leap! Everything is figure-out-able along the way.

To women in particular, I would urge you to be bold, be your own biggest advocate, and trust that most often the scary things are the most worth doing.
