Bhalla Protein: From Kitchen to Creation
“I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but fear often stood in the way. As I approached my fiftieth birthday, I found myself asking a question I could no longer ignore: If not now, then when?”
Words by Prabha, Founder of Bhalla Protein
Bhalla Protein started in my kitchen out of frustration.
Like many women, I was trying to hit my daily protein goals, but every option I reached for felt disappointing. The snacks were often chalky, highly processed, or filled with ingredients I didn't recognize. It always felt like a compromise.
So I started experimenting in my own kitchen. At first, it was simply for me. I tested recipes until I created a protein snack I was genuinely excited about. I chose a donut shape because it reminded me of childhood. I loved donuts growing up, and I wanted to create something that felt familiar while supporting a healthier lifestyle.
When I shared them with friends and family, the response surprised me. One friend suggested I start selling them, and that simple conversation changed everything. Until then, I had never truly considered turning the idea into a business.
Finding a name proved harder than creating the product. Eventually, I landed on Bhalla Protein, a combination of letters from my first and last name. It felt personal, and if I was going to build something, I wanted it connected to who I am.
I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but fear often stood in the way. As a first generation Canadian, I grew up understanding the importance of stability. Starting a business felt anything but stable. But as I approached my fiftieth birthday, I found myself asking a question I could no longer ignore: If not now, then when?
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that you cannot be everything to everyone. In the beginning, I wanted my products to appeal to everyone. Over time, I realized it was far more important to create something I truly believed in and allow the right people to find it.
Community markets have become one of my favourite parts of the business. I love speaking directly with customers and hearing their feedback. Those conversations have helped shape the brand and reminded me how powerful word of mouth can be.
If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be to stay curious and ask for help when you need it. Building a business comes with excitement, doubt, frustration, and joy. If you believe in what you're creating, give it time.
My petite joy is hugging my husband. He's my biggest supporter, my taste tester, and the first person cheering me on. On the difficult days, that support means everything.
Bhalla Protein didn't begin with a grand plan. It started with a problem I wanted to solve for myself, encouragement from a friend, and finally giving myself permission to try. Looking back, it feels like exactly where I was meant to be.
