How I Left Healthcare To Share Joy Through Flowers

By Melissa Heerschap, Founder of Cart and Stems

From caring for patients to caring for petals, my life took a turn I hadn’t expected. After years in healthcare, I began to feel a shift. I wanted more joy, more beauty, and a type of connection that wasn’t just about tending to people—but uplifting spirits.

That’s when Cart and Stems was born in the summer of 2023, thanks in part to my husband, who built Tulip, our little mobile flower cart. What started as a simple seasonal cart quickly grew into something more—a space where people could come together, build their own bouquets, and reconnect with nature’s quiet magic. Whether I’m at an artisan market or setting the mood at a bridal shower, birthday, or private event, it’s always about more than just flowers. It’s about the feeling they bring.

I make it a point to source blooms from local growers who share the same passion I do. Every stem has a story, and every arrangement carries a little joy, a little wildness, and a lot of love. I’ve watched strangers light up as they craft a bouquet, friends laughing over peonies, and petals picked with care become something entirely new.

Flowers brought me back to myself. Cart and Stems is not just a business—it’s a reflection of who I am and what makes me happy. Every pop-up, every event, every handmade bouquet is an invitation to share that happiness with others. If you see our flower cart at a market or local event, come say hello. Build something for yourself, or let me create one with you. Step out of your comfort zone. You might just find yourself—and a life that truly blossoms.

After years in healthcare, Melissa found her bloom in entrepreneurship. Based in the southern Georgian Bay area her mobile flower cart, Cart and Stems, brings handcrafted charm to artisan markets and private celebrations. Guests are invited to design their own bouquets, adding a personal touch to any event. Her mission is simple: to spread beauty, connection, and joy – one stem at a time.
