House of Elysia: A Study in Scent and Sensibility
“If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be to know your numbers. Understanding your costs, pricing, and margins allows you to make decisions with confidence. The math rarely lies.”
Words By Angela, Founder of House of Elysia
I created House of Elysia to share my love of high quality, handcrafted goods.
The business began with candles in 2023. I have always loved the atmosphere they bring to a home, but living with migraines and asthma made many fragrances difficult to enjoy. That challenge led me to learn the art of scent blending and create fragrances that felt balanced without being overwhelming. What began with a single candle soon grew into a collection of scents and a deeper appreciation for the creative process behind every product.
Naming the brand took time. As an avid reader, I have always been drawn to language. I kept returning to the word elysium, often associated with happiness, peace, and paradise. I wanted that feeling to sit at the heart of the brand while allowing room to grow beyond candles. The name Elysia captured what I was looking for, and House felt fitting in the tradition of fashion houses built around a distinct point of view.
What I love most is creating in small batches. There is something deeply rewarding about starting with raw materials and transforming them into a finished product. Every candle is made in my home studio and tested to ensure it reflects the standard I want associated with House of Elysia.
Like many small business owners, one of my biggest challenges has been finding my place within a crowded market. Over time, that encouraged me to strengthen the visual identity of the brand and focus on what makes House of Elysia distinctive.
Building a business is also an investment in growth. Early on, I focused on establishing a website and building a consistent presence online. Local markets have also become an important part of the journey. Meeting customers face to face, hearing their feedback, and seeing which products connect with people has shaped both the brand and future collections.
As a wife, mother of three, and someone working full time, time management is essential. I rely on planning, organization, and steady progress throughout the week rather than trying to do everything at once. That approach allows me to continue growing the business while protecting time with my family.
If I could offer one piece of advice to other women in business, it would be to know your numbers. Understanding your costs, pricing, and margins allows you to make decisions with confidence. As I often remind myself, the math rarely lies.
My petite joy is a Saturday morning with a fresh cup of coffee and sunlight pouring through the windows. Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones I look forward to most.
