RivR Candles: Made from What Matters Most

RivR Candles began during a time when I was craving something creative and hands on. I wanted to make something of my own, something that allowed me to step outside the roles I carried each day and simply create.
The idea for candles started with a few saved jars and a question about why I did not make candles myself. That simple thought became RivR Candles, a collection of soy wax candles with plantable labels that grow into wildflowers.
The name RivR is made from the first letters of my family’s names: R for Rod, I for Isaiah, V for Valerie, and R for River.
Building RivR has taught me far more than how to make candles. I have learned about pricing, inventory, boundaries, and trusting myself. I have also learned that not every opportunity is the right opportunity, and that saying no can be just as important as saying yes.
Markets, workshops, and word of mouth have helped introduce RivR to new people, but some of my favourite moments are hearing the stories connected to a candle or a scent. Candles can become part of a morning, a gathering, or an evening, and I love knowing that something I made can become part of someone’s everyday life.
My advice to other women entrepreneurs is to start before you feel ready. Confidence comes from action, not waiting until everything feels certain. Do not shrink your prices or your voice to make your business easier for someone else to accept.
RivR Candles continues to grow one candle, one customer, and one new lesson at a time. For me, that is part of the joy of building something that is truly my own.
