Love Note 08

An affogato (pronounced ah-foh-GAH-toh) is an Italian dessert that literally means “drowned” — because it consists of a scoop of gelato or ice cream that is drowned in a shot of hot espresso.

What makes it so beloved.

It's quick and easy (no prep beyond making coffee)
A perfect mix of dessert and after-dinner coffee
Great for warm weather or as a stylish, minimalist dessert

A charming tidbit.

In Italy, it's usually served in a small glass or cup and enjoyed with a spoon — sometimes even considered a coffee drink rather than a dessert.

Classic Affogato Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 scoop of vanilla gelato or high-quality vanilla ice cream (you can also use hazelnut or coffee-flavored gelato)

  • 1 shot (1–1.5 oz) of hot espresso (or strong brewed coffee as a substitute)

Optional Toppings

  • Shaved dark chocolate or cocoa powder

  • Crushed biscotti or amaretti cookies

  • A splash of coffee liqueur (e.g., Kahlúa or Frangelico)

  • Sea salt flakes or caramel drizzle

Instructions

  1. Chill your serving glass or bowl ahead of time (optional, but helps the gelato hold up longer).

  2. Place one generous scoop of gelato into the center of the glass.

  3. Pour the hot espresso directly over the gelato.

  4. Serve immediately with a small spoon.
